Backflow Survey Requires Bellwood Residents’ Participation

A few weeks ago, Bellwood residents received a survey from Backflow Solutions. Although this is not a village-operated program, the village endorses the company as reputable. Please contact them at the number below for assistance.

Illinois requires all village water systems to have and maintain an effective cross connection control program. A component of the program is a comprehensive survey of the water system. Bellwood has partnered with BSI (Backflow Solutions Inc.) to assist in conducting this survey.

What is cross connection? A cross connection is a physical connection between a possible source of contamination and the public drinking water system. This connection, if not properly protected, can lead to the contamination of the drinking water system through a backflow event or when the flow of water is reversed.

It is the customer’s responsibility to ensure that unprotected cross connections are not created. The required backflow prevention assemblies must be tested to ensure they meet requirements and must be maintained in operable condition.

Do you have a water cross connection? Many residential homes will not have a cross-connection device. However, they are typically installed with lawn irrigation systems, fire suppression systems, and several other applications as required by law. The village is requesting that residents complete a survey to ensure that the village knows where cross connections exist and ensure that they are properly maintained to protect the drinking water.
