For many years, Bellwood has recognized just how much senior citizens add to the diversity and vibrancy of the community. The village continues to benefit from the contributions of its active and visible senior population, and understands why it’s important to make a priority of offering programs, services and special events tailored to the senior community.
Bellwood residents can take advantage of many programs, services and resources offered close to home by West Suburban Senior Services and the Memorial Park District.
West Suburban Senior Services, which runs its Senior Center at 439 Bohland Ave. in Bellwood, has been assisting senior citizens in the near West Cook County suburbs township for more than 30 years. As a charitable, non-profit organization, the agency provides a variety of services, programs and assistance exclusively to address the needs of senior citizen residents.
Beginning as a transportation agency assisting senior citizens with rides to physicians, hospitals, grocery shopping and other locations, the agency has expanded its services and the communities it serves. The services have grown over the years and include an array of community-based programs. Each year, more than 6,000 senior citizens and their families are served. While the majority of services are provided in senior citizens’ homes, the agency operates out of three sites in Bellwood, LaGrange and Forest Park. In addition, staff routinely works with senior citizens in area hospitals, nursing homes and retirement communities.
Bellwood Breaks Ground on State-of-the-art Senior Housing Community (April 2014)
In another tangible sign of an improving local economy, the Village of Bellwood and the Senior Lifestyle Corporation has broken ground on the Senior Suites of Bellwood, an 89-unit affordable senior housing community that will mark the largest capital development project in the village in the last 20 years. The complex will be located at 3201 Randolph in Bellwood.
The modern facility, which is being developed by the Senior Lifestyle Corporation in cooperation with the Illinois Housing Development Authority, will be home to eligible

"We couldn’t be more excited that our hard work and resourcefulness to provide a much-needed asset for our seniors, their families and the entire community is paying off,” said Bellwood Mayor Frank A. Pasquale. “From the time I took office, supporting our seniors and providing them with options always has been a priority. Our goal was to make Bellwood an attractive place to build a senior building and to help secure the partnerships, funding and permits to make the project a reality. Senior Suites is another major step in our plan to move Bellwood forward and to address residents’ important needs.”
Bob Gawronski, vice president of Development and Acquisitions for Senior Lifestyle Corporation, added: “This is the perfect example of what can be accomplished when municipal, county and state agencies work in partnership with the private sector. Mayor Pasquale and the Village of Bellwood committed to help the seniors of this community. They reached out to Senior Lifestyle, sought help from the Illinois Housing Development Authority and the Housing Authority of Cook County, and refused to give up no matter what setbacks or challenges occurred along the way.
“We specifically need to thank IHDA for allocating the Low Income Housing Tax Credits and Illinois Affordable Housing Tax Credits that directly generated more than $14.7 million of private equity investment in this 89-unit senior housing community. Because of the tax credit programs, Senior Suites of Bellwood will remain affordable to area seniors for decades to come,” noted Gawronski.
The availability of apartments will be based on the order in which pre-applications are received by Senior Suites, the availability of the apartment at the desired rental rate and the applicant’s eligibility. Shortly before the building’s opening in 2015, at the time pre-application materials are made available, the actual rental rates for the initial year of occupancy will be published.
For more information when it becomes available, and to be placed on Senior Suites’ mailing list, call (312) 673-4333. Pre-applications will be distributed to the mailing list a few months before the facility opens next year.
