Is Your Grocery Bill Going Up?

September 21, 2015

Did you know that there is help available? The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as food stamps) provides a monthly benefit that is used to purchase groceries. SNAP benefits are loaded on to a LINK card each month which can be used at local stores, just like a debit card!

Studies have shown that nutrition needs change as we age and healthy eating can potentially reduce the need for medications. Although the least amount you can receive in monthly SNAP benefits is $16, the average for an adult living alone is $113 per month. There are even ways to increase your SNAP dollars if you have more than $35 per month in medical expenses or high rent or mortgage costs.

Individuals with disabilities, who are blind or 60 and over qualify for SNAP if their gross monthly income is less than $1,945. If you participate in other benefit programs like Medicaid or SSI you may qualify for SNAP benefits.
