Addison Creek Development Area

Addison Creek and adjacent districts are a series of districts which mirror the floodplain of the creek through the Village of Bellwood. The entire area is referred to as a Redevelopment Project Area (RPA). Longtime village residents will remember a catastrophic flood event in August of 1987, negatively impacting hundreds of residents and businesses. Nearly 40% of the creek’s watershed floodplain is within the Village of Bellwood. The objectives for this area are to encourage a strong residential base by improving flood management and reducing the flood plain and to enhance the necessary infrastructure to improve the quality of life for the existing residents and businesses. Attracting new overall development of residential and business uses will help protect the community’s tax and job bases.   Funds expended in the RPA also assist the village in leveraging State and Federal funds that are available to implement a substantial Addison Creek flood control project that may eliminate or reduce flood insurance premiums for as many residents as possible.   Solving or dramatically mitigating the flood plain issues along Addison Creek allows a host of new development opportunities to the Village of Bellwood and provides an opportunity to turn a presently unattractive presence into a very aesthetically pleasing resource for the village.
